NILEDUTCH EXPANDS ITS SERVICE OFFERING WITH ACQUISITION OF SERVICES AND OPERATIONS OF SAFMARINE MPV

Today, NileDutch, the West Africa specialist container line, announced the acquisition of the Europe to West Africa services and operations from Safmarine MPV, an independently run multi purpose vessel business owned by Maersk Line.

The acquisition complements and expands the service offering of NileDutch to customers of containerized, oil & gas, project and conventional cargo to carry a mix of cargo on the same vessel under a single bill of lading.

“The extension of our service offering delivered by this transaction will enable NileDutch to enhance its operational competiveness in global shipping. With so many infrastructure projects underway in especially West Africa, this multipurpose offering gives NileDutch a real edge and will allow us to seize more business opportunities in the fields of energy equipment, infrastructure, mining and agriculture. By bringing together the know-how of
both teams, we will be even better positioned to provide premium services to our customers across all markets,” said NileDutch COO Jan Willem de Braal.

Jorg Knuttel, Managing Director of Safmarine MPV commented: “Following the divestment of Safmarine MPVs owned vessels in 2015, today’s agreement marks the complete divestment of Safmarine MPV, which was announced in the Maersk Group 2015 Annual Report. For years Safmarine MPV has demonstrated that breakbulk and containers is a strong combination, hence this acquisition is a natural fit. NileDutch and Safmarine MPV are both West Africa specialists with great heritage and strong focus on customer service and personal relationships. As a result, I am happy that our operations will continue as part of NileDutch.”

The operations of Safmarine MPVs Europe to West Africa services will continue as NileDutch MPV with the first sailing commencing in April.
NileDutch’s MPV service will focus on the Europe West Africa trade. Direct calls are made from numerous ports on these services, which accommodate the full range of cargoes, including containers, breakbulk, neo-bulk, project modules and oil and gas-related cargoes. The multipurpose vessels of NileDutch are equipped with cranes capable of loading, carrying and offloading commodities in bulk, project cargo, heavy lift and
containers to the most challenging destinations in West Africa.

PIL: Solas VGM Requirement letter

One by one the lines wake up to address this new “problem”, here the PIL version:

Quote

SOLAS Container Weight Verification Requirement

Dear Valued Customers,

Effective 1st July 2016, in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS), all export containers must have a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) before being processed for loading onto a ship.

The shipper (or their representative agent) is responsible for obtaining and providing the VGM.

SOLAS prescribes two methods by which the shipper may obtain the VGM of a packed container:

Method 1: Weighing the container after it has been packed. (Weighbridge)

Method 2: Weighing all the cargo and contents of the container and adding those weights to the container

tare weight as indicated on the door of the container.

For either method, certified and calibrated weighing equipment must be used.

The VGM must be specified on the shipping documents and signed by the shipper.

Estimating of weights is not permitted.

Method 2 verification agents approved by SAMSA – see attached Marine Notice No19 of 2016

Based on this forthcoming event, from the 1st June, all of our clients will be expected

to perform their own Navis pre-advice function/s including the insertion of VGM.

The Navis pre-advice screen will be updated with the relevant fields for the described methods.

Implementation of this is expected to take place on 1st May while all the ports are closed and TPT’s

systems will not be affected.

We encourage all shippers to start preparing for the new regulations and to ensure they are ready to

handle any additional functionality that the new requirements may impose.

Kind Regards
