Jamaica – Mandatory Submission of 6-Digits Harmonized Code for Inbound Cargo

Dear Customer,
Jamaica Customs has formally notified that a 6-digits harmonized code will become mandatory for all inbound cargo to Jamaica.
Effective September 1, 2016 the 6-digit HS Code must be inserted at the Bill of Lading and container levels in the HS Code field for these cargo when submitting advance reports to Jamaica Customs.
In case of several goods a mixed cargo consigned as one shipment, the 6-digit code for the goods with the greatest representative value should be inserted.
Information on Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS) can be found at the World Customs Organization (WCO) website.
Failing to provide this information will result in a penalty of USD 8,500.00 per offence.
It is therefore mandatory to request the HS Code from the Booking party/Shipper in order to transmit properly to the Jamaica Customs system.
