During the loading/discharging operations of the containership “Maersk Karachi” the crane arm of a container gantry crane broke and fell down 50 meters into the ship. The crane driver died.
The ship got stuck at the pier and salvage work is starting.
Due to the above incident there will be consequences to the schedules and performance of the terminal as 8 of the 17 gantry cranes are held back by the terminal until the surveyors certify them to be save.

Esteemed customers,
As consequence of a tragic accident which occurred at the NTB terminal in Bremerhaven during the night to Thursday May 14th, we are expecting limitations of terminal- and vessel operations.
As a consequence, Magleby Maersk scheduled for Week 21, will not be able to call Bremerhaven. The vessel will call Wilhelmshaven instead, discharging the import containers destined for Bremerhaven. The discharged containers cannot be transported to Bremerhaven due to the current situation at the terminal.
For customer with cargo on board of the Magleby Maersk, following consequences apply:
- Container booked with Maersk and final destination Bremerhaven CY, must be picked up in Wilhelmshaven.
- We will try and deliver all containers booked with Maersk and final destination in the inland as planned.
Our customer service will contact you and provide details about which exact bookings are subject to these changes.
Please note that the export call of the Magleby Maersk during week 22 is –according to our current information- not impacted and the vessel will call Bremerhaven according to schedule.
Please appreciate we are currently unable to predict the further development of the situation.
Our thoughts are with the family of the victim.
